I loved art as a child but wasn’t allowed to pursue this at school. Instead I went on to gain a BSc in Physiotherapy and worked in the NHS, then became a full time mum. During this stage in my life, I picked up art again and in my 50's went back to college and gained an HND (Distinction) in Applied Arts – now I can’t imagine life without glass.
When I returned to education my plan was to specialise in ceramics; however towards the end of my two year course we started working with glass and fusing – I was hooked!
Once qualified, I initially continued working with both ceramics and fused glass but now specialise in glass. I’ve continued my professional development with more specialised glass courses, learned so much more and love experimenting and trying new techniques with glass fusing.
They say you can take the girl from Scotland but you can’t take Scotland from the girl. It’s true!
So much of my work is inspired by my homeland – the scenery, coastlines, colours.
Nature in general inspires me – sunsets and the colours and shapes of flowers. We are surrounded by beauty and I want to capture it in glass.
Each item is individually handmade by myself before being fired in a special high firing kiln. The process differs depending on the piece but usually involves hand cutting from sheet glass to a design, often with the addition of small pieces of glass (frit/stringers), glass powder or painting with enamels.
These are then carefully placed in the kiln sometimes for a single firing but often for a series of firings.
My work includes many forms of kiln formed glass art including coasters and tea light holders, plates/bowls and seasonal Christmas decorations. I also specialise in one off decorative stand alone pieces and wall art and have recently expanded my range to include garden art.
